Top exam tips every CeMAP student should know

The reality is that in order to achieve the minimum pass rate of 70% during your CeMAP examination, you are going to have to work. It is recommended that you invest around 200 hours of study time, so it is important to start early and set an achievable study timetable that will encompass all required areas of learning.

Shorter sessions, spread out, are shown to be more effective. Spending the first few minutes revisiting material from the previous session to refresh where you are, learning a small amount each day, can positively enhance your memory in the long run. Due to the volume of information that you are expected to learn, your short-term memory simply wouldn’t have the capacity to store it all in one go.

The CeMAP qualification is spread across three papers that all operate on a multiple choice basis. As the exam date draws nearer, there are step you can take to manage any anxiety:

• Maintain a well balanced diet to maximise your brain’s potential
• Maintain a regular exercise routine
• Get a good night’s sleep before the exam
• Plan your route to the exam and arrive early
• Dress warmly and comfortably

There are also a number of strategies that could help you during the test:

• Before starting any questions, read through the whole paper
• Read through a second time, and answer the questions you can confidently answer. If you are uncertain of an answer at this stage, bookmark it with a question mark to remind you to double check later
• Pace yourself, allowing enough time for each question and reviewing your answers
• Make sure you read each question carefully, as multiple choice questions can test your reading skills and how thoughtfully you think and process information
• Pick out key words from the questions, such as ‘always’, ‘not’, ‘sometimes’ and ‘many’
• Assess the topic which the question relates to, as this will help you to narrow down the possible answers
• Decide what is being asked, and in what context, to ensure the correct answer is given, because most wrong answers are made when the question is misread
• Try to answer the question before looking at the available answers
• If the question is asking you to select whether a statement is true or false, go through each of the answers and categorise them as true or false to find the right answer

Should you change an answer?

Only change a previously answered question if you are really convinced that you originally answered incorrectly.

Don’t know an answer

Guess. You will not be penalised if you get a question wrong. Revisit those questions that you know are not right and narrow your selection down to two, to help make an informed guess as to the answer.

Everyone is different, so how you tackle the study material will vary. Depending on your lifestyle and existing commitments, you can use the structure above to build an appropriate study plan, and help to focus your mind in anticipation of the final examination. Preparation and focus are key, and along with hard work and determination, you will be more positively placed to pass and gain the required achievement.
