Four reasons not to study for the CeMAP exam solo

You do not have to take a CeMAP training course to enter the exam, but trying to train yourself is usually a bad idea. Here are a few reasons why:

1. False economy

One reason why some people are tempting to study CeMAP solo is to save the cost of course fees, but the CeMAP exam is a challenging one. There are three exams and you need to score at least 70% to pass each module accurately to pass. Failing the exam is not necessarily the end of the road, as you can resit the exam, but each module of the exam costs £175, and resitting modules costs £140.

The £175 fee does include some study materials, but if you want specimen papers from past exams to practice with, these will cost around £20 each.

Studying solo lessens your chance of passing the CeMAP exam compared to studying on a good CeMAP course. If you fail the exams, you could end up paying more by studying solo than from signing up for a CeMAP training course, so it may not save you money in the long run.

2. Not understanding the material

Some of what you need to learn for the CeMAP training course is complex. The study material is not always clear, so it’s easy to think you have grasped a concept, but in reality, your knowledge may be incomplete.

In a CeMAP classroom, you have a chance to discuss issues with tutors and your fellow students. If you take an online course from home with the tutor support, you can ask your tutor to explain any difficult concepts, and benefit from feedback given.

3. Misplaced confidence

It’s easy to feel confident that you have learnt what you need to pass the exam and are ready to book an exam date. To test whether your confidence is justified though, you need to take past CeMAP exam tests. Are you consistently getting over 70% of the answers right? Are you guessing some answers rather than knowing? Are you 100% confident that you will pass the first time?

On a CeMAP course, your tutor will assess whether you are ready to take the exam or not. There is no point in spending £175 for the exam if you are not certain you can pass, or you may feel that you can pass, but have an unrealistic view of your level of preparedness.

4. Poor use of time

Beacon Financial Training offers two CeMAP intensive course modules that last five days each. You need to allow a few weeks’ space between the two courses to absorb what you have learnt. The total hours spent on each course, in addition to the time spent on your own supplementing your knowledge, is considerable. The average person finds self-studying dull and consequently tends to put off or limit their study and revision.

Book a training course

Yes, it is possible to study for the CeMAP exam without taking a course, but it is better in so many ways to book a place on a Beacon Financial Training course and increase your chances of passing. The CeMAP intensive courses are hard work, but it is more fun to study with other people than on your own.
