Many mortgage holders set to need urgent advice

As their fixed five-year mortgage deals come to a close, hundreds of thousands of UK mortgage holders are likely to need advice from a mortgage professional in the very near future.
This situation will apply to around 350,000 people, who are staring down the barrel of steep increases in their mortgage payments. There was a major rise in the number of people who secured fixed five-year deals towards the end of 2020, and they are the ones who will need help. A combination of the stamp duty holiday and Covid-19 driven market activity enabled them to benefit from very low average rates of around 1.88%. This will make what is coming more of a shock to them.
The average increase they face when remortgaging is 5%, which would mean their monthly payments would be likely to rise considerably. For someone with a mortgage worth £200,000, it would be an increase of £333 – which amounts to almost £4,000 per year.
Now advisors are being urged to step in and offer much-needed guidance, while borrowers are being encouraged to speak to them as early as possible. Greg Marsh from Nous.co told Mortgage Introducer that:
“My advice to anyone in this position is to get professional advice from a reputable mortgage advisor to make sure they get the best deal and the right loan for their circumstances.”
Some of the potential options that borrowers could consider are tracker mortgages and short-term fixed ones.
It is mortgage advisors who have the CeMAP qualification who are needed in this kind of situation.
