Mortgages replace marriage as biggest life commitment

According to research conducted by the Online Mortgage Adviser, 41% of people in London believe that taking on a mortgage was a bigger commitment than having children or getting married.

The survey questioned 2,310 people in the UK to discover what they believe is the biggest commitment a couple can make to each other. For a large proportion of the country, buying a home together is the largest commitment, with 42% of respondents in the East of England, 37% in the East Midlands and 30% in Wales all agreeing with this statement.

Although getting married or starting a family previously indicated commitment between a couple, applying for a mortgage is now the biggest commitment a couple can make, according to the recipients of the survey, all aged over 18.

The more romantic people appear to live in Scotland, as 41% cited getting married as the biggest commitment a couple can make. The north west appears to be the broodiest, with 38% deciding that having children is the biggest commitment.

For many people living in London, finding a partner to share a home with is the only way to afford a home of their own. According to the director of the Online Mortgage Adviser, Pete Mugleston, attitudes have changed and people are happy to live together without being married. Many believe that buying a home together is a sign of a true commitment to one another.
