Poll finds just half of lenders provide green mortgages

February 26, 2025 by Brendan O'Neill

A new survey of mortgage lenders in the UK has discovered that almost half are not currently offering borrowers any green mortgage options.

This survey was conducted by the Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB) and many of the biggest lenders in the country took part in it. The results reveal that green mortgages are on offer from just 52% of them at the moment. This is a figure that will cause some concern within the industry, but the survey did also produce more encouraging signals for the future.

When asked whether they expected to introduce loans of that kind at some point, 74% of lenders said that they did. That amounts to nearly three out of every five of the lenders that participated in the survey. When MAB carried out the same survey during 2024, the figure was just 59%.

Furthermore, 35% of participating lenders told the survey that they needed to do more when it comes to green mortgages. Another 48% said that progress was being made, but that greater efforts were still needed. This at least indicates an awareness of how important the issue is.

Karina Gerdes from MAB told Mortgage Finance Gazette that:

“We all have a responsibility to push the housing market to a more sustainable future – one that is as energy efficient as possible.”

She then added that green products were part of that, but not the whole story.

Most mortgage advisors with CeMAP training would like to introduce clients to green options, and can help people narrow down the search if this is a priority for them.
