Can you study CeMAP while working full time?

Advice & Tips
If you’ve thought about becoming a mortgage advisor, you may have wondered how getting qualified will tally with continuing your current role.
CeMAP is a professional qualification for mortgage advisors that meets the requirements of the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and is recognised across the industry.
The truth is, there is nothing to stop you from studying for CeMAP while working full time; many candidates will do just that. In this mini guide, we look at the practicalities of studying for CeMAP while you are in full-time work. This includes discussing how it works, the challenges of this approach and offering advice to those considering this path.
How it works
The most obvious consideration of this approach to learning is time. Whether you are in full-time employment – or are balancing CeMAP study with family commitments – you can expect the learning curve to be steadier.
Depending on the demands of your full-time role, you may also feel that you have less energy and focus to expend. This, too, is a normal part of balancing study with full-time work, as you will be fitting in study around your professional obligations. It is typical for study time to be planned for weekends or weekday evenings – times when you might otherwise have been relaxing.
At first, it may feel as if the information is not sinking in, but as the weeks go by, you can expect to feel like you are making progress as your knowledge increases.
On the flip side, you may also notice that the skillset you’ve developed at work helps you with your study. Firstly, a basic knowledge of finance can equip you with the tools you need for learning. As a committed professional, the time management and work ethic you possess will also come in handy.
The challenges
It is important to recognise that balancing a CeMAP course with full-time work comes with its hurdles:
Reduced concentration – our brains can only process so much information, and so, depending on the demands of your full-time role, there will only be so much learning you can manage each week.
Fatigue – burnout is a very real concern, and something you should watch out for. There is no benefit in studying to the point of extreme tiredness.
Slow pace – due to the factors we’ve outlined above, you can expect progress to be slower when you are augmenting work with study commitments.
Top tips for CeMAP study while working full-time
Here we provide some parting advice for full-time workers about to embark on a CeMAP course:
Go at your own pace
This is your qualification, and nobody else’s. It might be tempting to compare your own rate of progress to others, but this can be inaccurate and, ultimately, futile. Everyone’s work-study balance will be different, so ‘stay in your own lane’.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint
There is a real risk of ‘over-studying’ during the first period, while your enthusiasm for the subject is fresh. This, as we have warned above, can lead to burnout and be counter-productive in the long run. Aim for a steady pace.
Focus on each module in isolation
When you are eager to qualify, there is the danger of looking too far ahead and losing focus on your immediate goal. Take each module as it comes, immersing yourself in the concept and getting to grips with the core ideas, before progressing.
