Homeowners choose remortgages over moves

Surveys and Statistics
An increasing number of UK homeowners are opting to remortgage their properties instead of moving house, with mortgage advisors being urged to pay attention to this trend.
It has its basis in new figures that have just been issued by Twenty7tec. These cover product searches using the platform for the month of July and they show a big rise in the number of searches for remortgage products. The total for the month was 885,774, which was almost as many searches as there were for purchase products. In July of last year, remortgage searches reached 75.4% of purchase ones. By contrast, this year that had risen to 94%.
Several possible reasons are being put forward for this rise, including affordability issues, fluctuating mortgage rates and increased overall costs. According to Twenty7tec director Nathan Reilly:
“Homeowners are increasingly choosing to stay put and refinance rather than take on the financial and logistical challenges of moving. Many are opting to reinvest in their current property instead.”
Reilly then went on to point out that this is something that advisors must be aware of. He argued that they should focus more energy on their existing clients – connecting with them early to discuss remortgaging options. He stated that making use of their systems for customer relationship management would help them to do that.
Reilly concluded by saying that mortgage lenders have a part to play too. They need to make it as easy as possible for people to switch between products.
This will be very interesting for those with the CeMAP qualification; keeping in touch with customers as their mortgage deals come to an end can help capitalise on this trend.
