Is CeMAP recognised outside the UK?

For anyone living in the UK who wants to become a mortgage advisor, the industry standard qualification is CeMAP. This stands for Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice, and it is accepted by industry bodies like the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The CeMAP course consists of three modules that are followed by examinations. It can be studied online or at a training centre.

A common question for many people, though, is whether a CeMAP qualification is recognised in other parts of the world. Can you work legally as a mortgage advisor outside the UK if you have it? The answer for the most part is ‘no’ – and here are some of the reasons why.

FCA Recognition

The FCA is the official regulator for the financial services industry in this country – which includes the mortgage sector. As CeMAP is recognised by the FCA, it allows those who hold the qualification to offer mortgage advice for money. Successfully completing CeMAP training is regarded as evidence of your competency to do so.

However, the FCA only has that authority in this country. Therefore, a qualification recognised by it will not necessarily hold water in other parts of the world. Each country has its own financial services regulator and its own industry standard qualification.

UK Regulations

The content that is contained within the three CeMAP modules is designed to teach people specifically about the mortgage industry regulations and practices in this country. It is inevitable that those practices and regulations will be different in other parts of the world.

Completing CeMAP will provide you with all of the knowledge you need to work as an advisor in the UK without breaching the regulations, but that knowledge cannot simply be transplanted to other countries. You would need to research the laws in your country of choice and complete whatever its chosen course of study is.

When CeMAP might be relevant internationally

There is one situation where a CeMAP qualification may be relevant internationally. If you gain the qualification in the UK before moving abroad to live as an expat, you can legally work for clients in this country on a remote basis.

CeMAP is not recognised outside the UK, but it will allow you to work remotely with UK clients and lenders.
