Majority of buyers keen on energy efficient homes

May 22, 2026 by Brendan O'Neill

A new survey of prospective buyers has found the majority are looking for properties with energy efficiency modifications.

This is the main finding of a survey carried out by E.On Next. It shows that nine out of every 10 buyers want such modifications in their dream properties. Examples of the kind of improvements in question are EV charging facilities, heat pumps and solar panelling.

Over two-thirds of the people surveyed said the absence of green modifications would be a deal-breaker. A total of 70% felt this way, but 68% of respondents said this was not an issue they would have been aware of at this time last year.

What has changed things for those looking to buy is rising energy prices and a growing sense of uncertainty. 93% of them told the survey those issues had made them far more aware of the need for energy security. 60% said energy costs made them keen to have solar panels, with 61% prioritising facilities for EV charging.

Meanwhile 70% stated a heat pump was now the item that was most important to them. 63% indicated they were focusing on the presence of a home battery.

Richie Atkinson is the future energy homes head at E.On Next. He told Mortgage Strategy:

“The pace of change is striking – over two-thirds of prospective buyers say features like this wouldn’t have been on their radar a year ago.”

Those with CeMAP mortgage advisor training may feel that buyers are now particularly receptive to green mortgages.
