Research finds mortgage holders most worried about payments

August 20, 2026 by Brendan O'Neill

The latest research has found mortgage payments are the biggest financial worry for UK homeowners.

This is one of the key findings of research carried out by L&C Mortgages. Over 50% of those who currently have a mortgage find themselves worrying about paying it back once every month at a minimum. Close to one out of every five people who took part in the survey said paying back their mortgage was something they worried about every single week.

Meanwhile, 42% of mortgage holders rated it as the single monthly outgoing they were most worried about. In comparison, 20% of the respondents named grocery bills, while 17% pointed to energy costs.

In terms of what the actual monthly mortgage costs are, the research shows considerable variance. For nearly half of the respondents, the payments range from £500 to £999. For 39% of them, the cost per month is at least £1,000. A total of 12% of those surveyed said they were paying £1,500 or more in mortgage payments.

David Hollingworth works for L&C Mortgages as an associate director. He told Mortgage Soup that the findings highlight the scale of the financial pressures people are under.

He then added:

“The good news is that there are often steps borrowers can take to reduce their monthly payments or better manage their mortgage costs. Reviewing your deal before it ends and understanding the options available could make a meaningful difference.”

This shows why mortgage advisors with CeMAP training are in such demand. They are best placed to help borrowers review their mortgages.
