Research indicates buyers keen on new towns

February 16, 2025 by Brendan O'Neill

The latest piece of research by one of the UK’s top mortgage lenders indicates that there is considerable interest in new town developments among prospective buyers.

This research is the work of Santander, and the lender spoke to mortgage advisors throughout the country for it. The results show that the vast majority of them – over 80% in fact – had experienced rising client interest in homes situated within new towns. When looked at on a regional basis, it was the East of England where customer demand for new town properties was strongest. Interest in them was confirmed by 52% of advisors who are based there.

Other UK regions that have witnessed notable increases in demand for new town homes include the South West and East, as well as Scotland. The percentage of mortgage advisors who had experienced that was 22% for each of those regions.

The advisors that spoke to Santander also said that they felt positive about plans announced by the Government to construct new towns across Britain. 78% said that they thought this would boost home ownership numbers. Another 83% felt that the impact would be seen within just three years.

Some of the reasons clients cited for their interest in new town properties were the access to school and hospital facilities. These were picked by 88% and 58% respectively.

Dave Morris from Santander said that the results showed that people were now prioritising community when looking for a home.

This is a development that anyone with the CeMAP mortgage advisor qualification will likely be monitoring closely.
