Studying tips
Mortgage advisers assist people with what is usually the largest purchase in their lives. If you want a career as a mortgage adviser, you need to gain a CeMAP qualification.
CeMAP is an abbreviation for the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice. There are two main sections to a CeMAP course.:
1. Financial Regulations
The UK finance industry is heavily regulated, so it is vital for mortgage advisers to know the relevant legislation. Mortgage advisers need a good knowledge of how financial regulations affect mortgages, as well as other financial products including savings, tax and pensions. Advisers also need to be familiar with data protection and ways to avoid money laundering.
2. Mortgage Knowledge
The second part of a CeMAP course is the detailed knowledge of the mortgage market, the type of mortgages available, mortgage law, and repayments. Students need to know about how the mortgage application process works and how to deal with issues that can arise after completion of the mortgage and house purchase.
How long does it take?
The official CeMAP exam board estimate that it takes about 200 hours of study to be able to pass the exams. How long this takes depends on whether the student studies part time or full time. If you want to remain in full-time employment, there are course providers that will allow you to study at home in your spare time. It is also possible to be ready for the CeMAP exam with an intensive course that lasts a few days.
What qualities does a candidate for a CeMAP course need to have?
CeMAP training is challenging as there is much to learn. To finish the course requires enthusiasm and continuing motivation.
Attention to detail is a must, not only when studying CeMAP, but also as a mortgage adviser. A mortgage adviser needs to be able to perform accurate calculations so that they can work out the best mortgage deal for their clients. Mortgage advisers also need high analytical skills, and the CeMAP qualification will develop these skills.
