Survey highlights importance of advisors in current market

October 24, 2026 by Brendan O'Neill

A new survey has highlighted the importance of mortgage advisors to homeowners trying to navigate the current market.

This survey was carried out by Santander and the results are clear. 93% of the homeowners that the lender spoke to said that they needed an advisor to explain how economic shifts and government policies will affect them. Santander conducted its survey at a time when the Autumn Budget is looming on the horizon, so many of those who have a mortgage are likely to be consulting an advisor.

People who took part in the survey were also asked what they hoped for from this budget. In response, 38% said that they wanted to see moves that would encourage mortgage lenders to reduce their rates. Another 34% stated that lower stamp duty charges would be their first priority.

More support schemes and affordable housing programmes targeted at those buying for the first time was named by 34%, while 27% said that they wanted to see a boost to the overall supply of housing.

When asked what they wanted from a mortgage advisor, 45% wanted clarity concerning their situations. 39% said help in understanding their options for borrowing and what they can afford. 34% stated that they were looking for advice about when to make a mortgage application.

Ben Merritt from Santander told Financial Reporter:

“Our Broker Perception Barometer has found that brokers are at the heart of helping people navigate that uncertainty, providing expert guidance when it’s needed most.”

Among other benefits, this is one reason many people choose to take CeMAP training courses.
