How to get the best out of a property website

March 26, 2017 by Brendan O'Neill

When you decide to buy a home, there is a very good chance that you will conduct a search on Rightmove, the UK’s largest property portal. There are more than a million homes for sale on the site, so how can you optimise your search?

When you find a home which you are interested in, there will probably be some competition, so it is crucial that you are among the first to look at a home. Signing up for email alerts is a good idea, as you will be notified immediately when a new property comes onto the market.

Although the most common way to search for a property is by the price, and from highest to lowest, or vice versa, it is preferable to set the filter to ‘newest’ so that you see the latest properties to be added to the website. You may also want to see the ‘oldest’ as you may be able to agree a lower price for a property.

Don’t narrow down your search for a home to a restricted area, as you may be missing out on a home which is only just outside your preferred area, but cheaper. Although searching online is one of the most popular methods of looking for a property, sign up with estate agents, as they will inform you of homes which are new to the property market before they appear online.

Seeking advice from a mortgage adviser who has taken a CeMAP course will ensure that you find the right mortgage deal to buy your new home.
