Starting a brand-new career as a mortgage advisor might seem daunting, but you don’t necessarily need experience to get started.
However, there are ways you can pick up a greater understanding of your subject on your path to practicing, like becoming an apprentice or joining a training scheme. Regardless of the route you take, you will need to get a qualification that gives you the legal right to practice, like a Certificate of Mortgage and Practice (CeMAP).
Get a qualification
The best way to get experience as a mortgage advisor is to enrol in a CeMAP course (https://www.beaconfinancialtraining.co.uk/courses/online/) and gain a qualification that empowers you to practice. CeMAP has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and provides candidates with an in-depth understanding of their chosen profession. From an understanding of the current financial services industry and the latest mortgage products to how to manage client expectations and completion issues, the CeMAP gives you the knowledge and credentials you need.
Join a training scheme
Some building societies and banks offer training schemes for those who wish to work as a mortgage broker. While not essential, having GCSEs and relevant experience, for example in finance, customer service or sales, can increase a candidate’s chances of being accepted. Trainees will need to obtain a CeMAP qualification to start practicing as an advisor, but the bank or building society may pay for some or all of the costs involved.
Become an apprentice
You can train as a mortgage advisor through an advanced apprenticeship. It usually takes about 12 months for candidates to complete and involves a mix of study and on the job learning. Five GCSEs (or equivalent) that include Maths and English (grades A to C) are typically required to be an apprentice. However, would-be brokers will still need to sit their CeMAP and pass to practice.
