How to improve your employment options in Birmingham

July 22, 2016 by Brendan O'Neill

Finding suitable employment in a large city like Birmingham can be a real challenge for many people. There is so much competition that you have to try and make sure that you stand out from the crowd when you submit an application. Although there are some steps that you really need to take, like producing a CV, registering with recruitment agencies and practicing interview skills, there are other options to help you find employment too.

There is a large percentage of jobs that are never advertised to the public, so consider sending your CV and a covering letter directly to the HR manager of the company you are interested in working for. If the company is interested in what you have to say, they will keep your details on file for a future vacancy.

While you are waiting to be accepted for a position, make the most of your spare time. Do something you can put on your CV, like volunteering with an organisation overseas, or taking a course to improve your skills. If you have a particular role in mind, like becoming a mortgage adviser, you may want to consider taking a CeMAP course. This will ensure that you are already qualified for the position and that you take the initiative; both attractive qualities that employers are looking for. Professional qualifications, like the CeMAP training course, are always highly desired by employers.

Make use of social media so that you can see if any vacancies are likely to arise or are available, and contact the company yourself before the vacancy is publicised.
