How many hours a week should you study for CeMAP?

October 22, 2026 by Brendan O'Neill

Are you wondering how most students revise for CeMAP?

Generally, people study for 8 to 10 hours a week to complete the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP), on a part-time basis over a three- to six-month period.

The right amount of study for you will depend on a few factors. What existing knowledge do you have? How do you learn best? How quickly do you want to qualify? Let’s look at the question more closely…

Are 8 to 10 hours the ‘happy medium’?

CeMAP comprises three modules, and LIBF suggests around 50 hours of study time for each exam unit.

This means that, if you spread the work across a working week, 8 to 10 hours is enough to make steady progress without burning out.

If you are fitting your studies around a job or family commitments, that may be ideal.

If you have experience in financial services, you may find that topics such as regulation and terminology are easier to understand. If you are completely new to the industry, it is worth allowing some extra time to master the more technical topics.

Study regularly rather than cramming

Short, regular sessions are generally more effective than occasional long ones.

Long gaps between study sessions mean that you spend time recapping what you have forgotten. Instead, aim to set a clear goal for each session and use practice questions rather than simply reviewing notes.

You may benefit from combining the revision of earlier topics with studying new material. As you get closer to an exam, try completing timed mock exams.

Full-time study

If you can study full-time, you can progress much faster. Intensive courses cover each module over a few days with a trainer. They suit people who want to qualify quickly, as well as businesses training staff within a set timeframe.
