Mortgage Advisors
The latest survey of mortgage advisors reveals that half of them think people buying for the first time should be prioritised for support by the government.
Pegasus Insight conducted this survey, as a collaboration with Accord Mortgages. The headline finding was that 50% of advisors see first-time homebuyers as the market segment that should be targeted for government assistance. They argue this group has the most hurdles in their way – including worsening affordability and rising deposit costs. Those were named as the biggest problems by 44% of advisors.
Mortgage advisors also told the survey the absence of support was something they were ever more concerned about. A number of them argued that buying a first home was getting harder all the time.
Many of the advisors pointed out that this was bad for the property market. One of them said that people buying for the first time were essential to the overall flow of transactions.
Among the things advisors felt such buyers need are guidance and education on the market. They acknowledged professional advice was at the heart of this, but added the government could do more.
Chris Hill works for Accord Mortgages as its sales head. Speaking to Mortgage Strategy, he said:
“High house prices and challenging deposit requirements, along with affordability constraints and a lack of targeted schemes are all making it harder for people to take that first step onto the ladder.”
This does show how essential advisors with CeMAP training are to first-time buyers though.
