What qualities should a good mortgage advisor have?

December 6, 2023 by Brendan O'Neill

There are lots of people who want to take CeMAP training courses and become professional mortgage advisors, but those advisors that stand out in a competitive field will have certain qualities that separate them from the rest. So, what exactly makes a really good advisor?

At the heart of it is real care and concern for your clients. The best mortgage advisors do not see them simply as a means to earning money, but have a genuine interest in finding out what their clients want and need so that they can provide guidance that is precisely tailored to them.

It is what is described nowadays as being a ‘people person’ and can be summed up as emotional intelligence. That quality is also very important in being able to pick up on any signs that clients are vulnerable due to financial strains and getting them to open up about those problems so that they can be provided with help and support.

However, those strong people skills need to be balanced by an analytical mind. A good mortgage advisor looks at finding the right loan for their clients as a sort of puzzle, involving analysing the available data concerning affordability and criteria, and putting this together in a way that will work for each individual.

Finally, a mortgage advisor is partly a salesman. The job involves selling clients on loans that you think will suit their situations, but also selling a story in which they achieve their dreams of homeownership and a sense of security.
